Organ donors are true heroes!
Being an organ donor is saving lives! A donor can save up to 8 people.
In Belgium, nearly 1,500 people have a serious illness and could be saved by an organ transplant.
One of their vital organs is affected by the illness and could be replaced by an organ taken from another person: a kidney, a liver, a heart…

These 1,500 people are on a waiting list because there are not enough organs available.
The big challenge: finding a compatible and well-functioning organ for each person. For example, the donor must have the same blood type as the recipient. The number of people waiting for an organ is constantly changing, with new patients continually being added.
Today, nearly 500,000 people have declared that they want to donate their organs after their death, to allow these sick people to return to a normal life.
In 2023, 369 deceased people donated at least one organ and 943 sick people were able to benefit from a transplant. Thanks to these 369 heroes, 943 people had a chance to be saved.
Our law provides that each of us can be an organ donor after death. But everyone can also choose: to refuse to be a donor or to voluntarily declare themselves a donor.
