For or against? — The law + the role of doctors and the family (pause)
Pedagogical objective
This sequence is designed as a narrative pause. After several interactive phases, it places pupils in a listening position and gives them real-world context: what the law says in Belgium, how doctors verify a person’s wishes, what happens if nothing has been registered, and why talking about it with the family before the situation arises is essential. It also helps pupils understand the value of officially registering their choice.
Activity flow
The activity resembles a short animated scene, similar to an explainer. Pupils observe a situation, read the subtitles, and gradually understand the steps: register, verification, the role of the family, and the importance of discussion. Interactivity is minimal: this is mainly a time for understanding and taking a pause.
Teacher’s role
You can let the activity run as a “capsule”, or read the subtitles aloud, especially in a whole-class setting. Feel free to pause to check understanding: “Why does registering one’s choice help doctors?”, “Why is it better to talk about it beforehand?”. This step works well as a springboard for a more personal exchange (without becoming intrusive) about the importance of discussing the topic within the family.
