From donor to recipient — Understanding compatibility and urgency

Pedagogical objective

After identifying the transplantable organs, this activity helps pupils understand how it is decided who receives an organ transplant. They discover that it is not simply “the first person waiting”, but a matter of compatibility and urgency, supported by a very precise organisation.

Activity flow

The pupil receives an available organ and an identity sheet for the donor (blood group, body size, country, etc.). They must then adjust the recipient’s parameters to find a match. The activity uses very clear visual feedback (the ambulance moves closer or farther away), as well as a time indicator that reminds pupils that transplantation must take place quickly.

Teacher’s role

Whole-class facilitation is particularly useful here. You can pause the activity at certain moments to help the class reason through the process: “Does the blood group match?”, “Why does body size matter?”, or “In which cases could the country have an influence?”. The aim is to develop a logical approach and bring out the key idea: lives are saved, but action must be fast and accurate.
